What quantum will actually change first (hint: not Bitcoin)

by Lena Novak

Everyone fixates on quantum breaking encryption. As a materials person, I think the first real wins are in simulation: modelling molecules and materials classical computers can't. Better batteries, catalysts, fertilisers. That's a quieter revolution than "quantum hacks the world" but a far more useful one, and it arrives sooner. Encryption-breaking is real, but post-quantum crypto is already rolling out to meet it.

Agreed — chemistry simulation is the killer app, and it needs far fewer qubits than Shor's algorithm.
