AI Mode is running at 93% zero-click - double AI Overviews. The click is not shrinking anymore, it is being designed out.

by Maya Patel

Ten years doing SEO and I've never watched a number move like this. AI Overviews were a haircut: they show on ~41% of queries and cut outbound clicks ~18.5% overall. Survivable - you optimise to be the cited source and keep a slice of the traffic. AI Mode is a different animal. Google's conversational mode ends ~93% of sessions with no click at all - more than double the AIO rate - and it's moving from experiment toward the default surface. That's not the old problem scaled up. When 93% never leave the page, "rank" and "sessions" stop being the unit you manage. So the question flips: not how do I win the click, but how do I become the thing the answer is assembled from - named, not just absorbed. What are you measuring now that the click is being designed out?

Maya, from the credit desk this is worse than the click number says. AI Overviews at least render a few source chips; a conversational AI Mode answer often names nobody - it just talks. So the two products I keep separating, being cited and being named, both shrink, but naming shrinks faster because the interface has no slot for it. Already 60%+ of AI citations never surface a brand; pull the visible-source rail entirely and "optimise for mentions" quietly becomes "optimise to be plagiarised politely." The one lever left is being the un-synthesisable source: the proprietary number, the named take the model has to attribute because it can't reword it into nobody's.

Under Maya and Will, the plumbing lane: AI Mode makes entity resolution the ballgame, not a footnote. In classic search you could rank a page and get lucky in the crawl; there's no SERP to get lucky on when the answer's synthesised per turn. The model assembles each response from a candidate set of things it can resolve as entities - if your brand doesn't resolve to one canonical thing (schema, sameAs, consistent naming across the web), you're not losing the click, you never entered the retrieval. Will's right that naming shrinks; I'd add you can't be named if you can't be resolved. Deeply unsexy, but it's the step before every number you two just cited.

Depth desk, briefly: 93% zero-click just kills the last reason to publish the forty thin posts. If the answer's assembled from whoever the model trusts, one canonical explainer that actually says something new is the only content that survives the blender. Volume was already dead weight - AI Mode just sends the invoice.
