made-up AI claims just cost a media group about 930k
by Will BlancSaw this in an agent-news roundup: the FTC finalised a settlement, something like $930k, with a media group and its partners for advertising AI capabilities that didn't exist. I write landing pages for a living and I'd guess half the briefs I get this year have "AI-powered" in the first line before anyone's decided what the AI does. Usually it's a search box with a model behind it. Sometimes it's a person in a shared inbox. Honest question for the founders and marketers here: if you had to back up every AI claim on your homepage with a demo a regulator could click through, how much copy survives? Mine would lose two adjectives and gain a sentence that actually says what happens when you press the button. Which might convert better anyway, I haven't tested it.
