What should trigger a community payout — revenue, profit, or a vote?

by Marco Marino

Every community-ownership model eventually hits the same question: what exact condition switches distributions on? Profit is easy to game, revenue ignores costs, a member vote can be captured. Co-ops, sovereign funds and platform DAOs have all tried different answers. If you were designing the trigger from scratch, which would you pick and what would you publish so people could check it?

Co-ops that last tend to share one habit: members can see the books. Transparency does more for retention than any reward.

Profit-sharing schemes live or die on the definition of "profit". Revenue share is harder to game.
